Parents and teachers want children to benefit from the wealth of opportunity offered by the Internet.  At the same time, they are worried about letting their children and students loose in cyberspace.  There are dangers out there, but just like dangers in the real world, they can be dealt with.  One of these dangers is hate.

The media - the news, the movies, advertising, and now, the Internet - give most people their first exposure to "the other".  All over the world the media perpetuate stereotypes by depicting "the other" in quick sound bites or simplistic visual imagery.  Intentionally or otherwise, stereotyping can fuel prejudice and racism.  Extreme expressions of such ignorance are found in hate groups and their campaigns of hate propaganda and recruitment.  Hate groups are increasingly using the Internet as a vehicle for their messages.

This primer has been designed to help parents and teachers understand hate on the Internet, so that they, as adults, can help young people develop the skills they need to handle online hate.
